MCHS boys win third straight EMO title

Andrew Moore has been there and done that.

The Montgomery County senior played for a conference championship team before. When he was a sophomore at Troy Buchanan, he helped the Trojans win the GAC North title.

On Feb. 21, Moore celebrated another conference championship after MCHS cruised to an 84-38 victory over the Clopton Hawks at Ballew & Snell Court to win its third straight Eastern Missouri Conference title. The Wildcats finished with a 10-0 record in league play and extended their EMO winning streak to 30 games.

After the game, Moore took pictures with his senior teammates Clayton Parker, Tatum Wessel, Tyler Erwin, Jay Rodgers, Sean Rodgers and Isaiah Thomas with the EMO championship plaque. Parker, Erwin, Thomas, Wessel and the Rodgers cousins played on all three championship teams.

Moore said he was thrilled to help the Wildcats win the conference title in his first year at MCHS.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling,” Moore said. “We have a pretty special group of guys, so it’s pretty fun to do it with them.”

The Wildcats ended their regular season with a 25-1 record, matching last year’s win total. They also extended their winning streak to 14 games.

Also on Feb. 21, the MCHS girls wrapped up their regular season with a 47-27 loss to Clopton, which won its first EMO title since the 2018-19 season. The Wildcats dropped to 14-11 overall and ended their conference season at 8-2, good for a second-place tie with Elsberry and Louisiana. Four days before, MCHS had its 59-game EMO winning streak snapped with a 39-35 loss to Elsberry.

Freshman Emma Rodgers led the Wildcats with nine points, followed by sophomore Aubrey Janes with seven, senior Aliviah Fischer with six and sophomore Khloe Kribbs with four.

In the boys contest, MCHS had nine players score at least one point. Parker and Thomas each had 19 points, followed by Moore with 14, Jay Rodgers with 11 and junior Chase Queathem with nine.

Moore scored all of his points off the bench. He’s coming off a left ankle injury he suffered against St. Francis Borgia on Feb. 10 on the road.

“It (my ankle) felt pretty good tonight,” said Moore, who sat out for two games. “I’ll get a couple of days of rest here and hopefully, it will be perfect for districts.”

Moore played at Troy Buchanan for three years before transferring to MCHS. Two years ago, he helped the Trojans win the GAC North title with a 9-1 record and by one game over Francis Howell.

This year, Moore helped the Wildcats demolish the competition in conference play. MCHS won all of its games by an average margin of 49 points. The Wildcats had already clinched at least a tie for the league crown before their game against Clopton.

“We worked a lot on our game, so it’s starting to show this year for sure,” Moore said. “We do what we do every time. If we play harder than the other team, we’re going to have a good chance.”

Clopton and Bowling Green finished in a tie for second in the EMO standings at 9-1.

After three months, Moore continues to be a strong addition to the Wildcats. He’s averaging 17 points in 21 games and scored in double figures in all but two of those games.

Now, he’s looking to help the Wildcats add another district championship plaque to their trophy case. MCHS won the district title last year en route to a fourth-place finish at the Class 3 Show-Me Showdown in Columbia.

“It’s the last go-around, so we have to leave it on the line,” Moore said.
