For four years, Aliviah Fischer was a softball standout at Montgomery County High School, earning two all-state awards and three all-Eastern Missouri Conference honors.
Now, the MCHS senior is enjoying an outstanding basketball career for the Wildcats.
Since she joined the program as a freshman, Fischer helped the Wildcats win 78 games with four winning seasons and three EMO championships. On Feb. 15, she helped her team clinch a winning record by scoring six points in the 40-32 win over North Callaway.
The Wildcats improved to 14-9 overall and are guaranteed to finish with their eighth straight winning season. Fischer said she’s thrilled to play for a program that has been successful since Joe Basinger took over the program in 2016.
“It’s simply a good legacy to be a part of and to be proud of,” Fischer said. “I think it only pushes us harder, which is a good thing.”
MCHS will take a 14-10 record into its regular season finale with Clopton on Feb. 21. The Wildcats had their 59-game Eastern Missouri Conference winning streak snapped on Feb. 17 with a 39-35 loss to Elsberry on the road. Their scheduled game with Southern Boone on Feb. 19 was canceled due to inclement weather.
MCHS extended its winning streak to a season-high six games with the win over North Callaway.
Freshman Emma Rodgers was the Wildcats’ leading scorer with 22 points. Sophomores Aubrey Janes and Kaylee Daume each had six points.
Trailing 9-6 midway in the first quarter, MCHS responded with an 8-0 run that carried over into the beginning of the second quarter and went on to extend its EMO winning streak to 59 games.
“It was good,” Fischer said. “I’m glad we got the win, another conference win.”
Fischer is the only senior on the MCHS girls team. She was recognized after the game. She received a gift basket from her teammates that included her favorite drink – apple juice.
“I really like apple juice,” said Fischer, who was also the only senior on the MCHS softball team last fall.
Fischer has been playing basketball since third grade. She played for a youth team that was coached by Chris Rodgers.
This year, she’s leading a team that has four sophomores and three freshmen on the roster.
“I’ve definitely been trying to be a leader and show the girls that it’s not just a basketball game,” Fischer said. “If you put hard work into everyday life, you’re going to get good results. Basketball can help you with that. If you put hard work into basketball, you’ll get good results.”
Fischer had several outstanding efforts this season, including a 20-point performance in the 43-33 win over Louisiana on Feb. 13.
The senior said the off-season work played a key role in her team’s successful season.
“We had a lot of open gyms. Basinger opened the gym in the summer a lot,” she said. “We get extra work in, so that’s a big part of it.”
Fischer isn’t planning to play basketball in college. She will continue her softball career at Missouri Baptist University in the 2026 season.
“It’s definitely not my No. 1 sport,” Fischer said. “I don’t know I’ll miss it as much as softball, but I’ll definitely miss it.”
