With 25 wins in dual-match play, an eighth Eastern Missouri Conference championship and a state qualifier, the Montgomery County golf team celebrated its best season in Cody Hasekamp’s three-year tenure as head coach.
The Wildcats’ season officially ended on May 20 in Sedalia as junior Karter Reagan placed 25th with a two-day score of 168 at the Class 2 state tournament at the Sedalia Country Club. Reagan was MCHS’ lone representative at the state tournament and it marked the fifth year in a row the Wildcats had a state qualifier.
MCHS had a total of 14 players on its roster, half of them were seniors. Clayton Parker, Jay Rodgers, Tatum Wessel, Burke King, Isaiah Thomas, Andrew Moore and Kinsley Hutcheson make up the senior class.
Hutcheson was the only senior who competed with the Wildcats all four years and plans to continue her golf career at Crowder College next year.
Parker and Rodgers returned for their second seasons and were valuable players for the Wildcats. Parker, who plans to play basketball at Morehead State University, finished runner-up with a 39 in MCHS’ season-opening match against Winfield, North Callaway, Clopton, Van-Far and Mexico on March 25 at Wildcat Golf Course. He also finished with medalist honors in a road match against Wright City on March 27. Rodgers shot a 49 in the Wildcats’ home match against MMA, South Callaway, Wright City and Silex on April 1.
Moore, Thomas, Wessel and King played with the golf team for the first time this spring. Moore, a transfer from Troy Buchanan, earned all-EMO honors after finishing fourth with an 88 at the conference tournament and finished as medalist with a 38 in a tri-match against Van-Far and Bowling Green. Wessel was in the starting lineup for most of the season, including the EMO and district tournaments.
Reagan and Wyatt Moore were the Wildcats’ only returning players from last year’s starting lineup.
Reagan shot in the 40s in eight dual matches and finished with an 83 at the Hannibal Tournament, an 86 at the EMO tournament and a 90 at the Elsberry Invitational. He qualified for state by finishing in an eight-way tie for 13th with an 82 at the district tournament on May 12 at Norwoods Golf Club in Hannibal.
March began his junior year with a 46 in the Wildcats’ season opener on March 25. He shot a 45 in a quadrangular home match against Hallsville, South Callaway and Fatima on April 11. He placed 10th with a 102 at the conference tournament to be named on the all-EMO team.
Rounding out the team were Jacob Ridenour and Jacob Teson and sophomores Jack Barker, Owen Merz and Kaiden Waite.
The Wildcats played in three home matches plus contests at Wright City, Van-Far, Elsberry, Hannibal, Silex and Clopton. They won the team title in their five-team home match with MMA, South Callaway, Wright City and Silex, shooting a 182.
MCHS finished with a four-player score of 191 at the conference tournament, edging last year’s champion North Callaway by two strokes. The Wildcats finished third last year and second the year before.
Reagan joined a group of six MCHS golfers who competed at state for the last five seasons. The other golfers were Logan Hutcheson and Keenan James (2021 and 2022), Keaton Reagan (2023) and Robby Rodgers and Maddox James (2024).
