Jacob Hogue turned in another strong performance for the Montgomery County football team on Sept. 20 against South Callaway on the road, scoring two touchdowns to increase his team-leading total to four.
But his effort wasn’t enough to help the Wildcats pick up their first win of the season. MCHS dropped to 0-4 with a 35-19 loss to the Bulldogs in a Week 4 game at South Callaway High School.
It’s the fourth year in a row the Wildcats lost to their former Eastern Missouri Conference foes. South Callaway, which now plays in the Central State Eight Conference improved to 2-2 and won its second straight game.
MCHS is back in action on Sept. 27, when it travels to Van-Far to take on the Indians, who came from behind to beat Mark Twain 28-26 on Sept. 20 to improve to 4-0. Last year, the Wildcats beat the Vandalia school 24-22 at Jim Blacklock Field.
MCHS will also play on the road for the third straight week. The Wildcats lost at North Callaway and South Callaway in each of the last two weeks.
The Bulldogs stormed to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the way. They won their second straight game after losing their first two contests. The Mokane school will travel to Russellville in a Week 5 contest.
Hogue ended South Callaway’s shutout hopes by catching a 13-yard touchdown pass from junior Adrian Combs with 7:33 to go in the second quarter, cutting the Bulldogs’ lead to 21-7.
Hogue scored his second touchdown, a three-yard run, with 1:05 left in the third quarter to trim South Callaway’s lead to 27-13.
In addition to his two touchdowns against South Callaway, Hogue also made trips to the end zone in games against North Callaway and Monroe City. So far, he’s picking up right where he left off from last year, when he finished with 768 yards passing with six touchdowns and 337 yards rushing with five TDs.
The Wildcats got a 24-yard touchdown catch from Owen See with 11:22 to go in the game to get within 35-19. Hogue set up See’s first touchdown of his high school football career by catching a 28-yard pass from Combs at the Bulldogs’ 24-yard line.
MCHS had another opportunity to score another touchdown in the closing minutes, but Combs fumbled the ball at the Bulldogs’ 2-yard line.
The 19 points marked a season high for the Wildcats. They scored 18 points in each of the last two games.
After four games, MCHS has given up an average of 37 points per game. The Wildcats gave up more than 30 points three times this season, including the contest with South Callaway.
Junior Chase Queathem made two fumble recoveries. His first fumble recovery in the second quarter set up Hogue’s first touchdown.
Queathem made another fumble recovery in the fourth quarter, giving the Wildcats the ball at their 32-yard line. The nine-play, 66-yard drive ended with Combs’ fumble.
MCHS is one of two EMO teams that are seeking their first win of the season. The other is Louisiana, which dropped to 0-4 with a loss to Wright City.
