MCHS top Wright City to remain unbeaten in EMO

Posted

A year ago, Kaylee Daume sat out almost her entire freshman season with the Montgomery County girls basketball team due to injuries and illnesses.

Now after two months, she’s one of the top players of a MCHS squad that is looking to finish with its eighth straight winning season and its sixth consecutive Eastern Missouri Conference title.

Daume turned in one of her best performances of the 2024-25 season, scoring 10 points to help the Wildcats to a 46-29 win over the Wright City Wildcats. The victory bumped MCHS’ record to 8-7 overall and 4-0 in EMO play.

“It was a pretty good game,” Daume said.

The Wildcats, Clopton and Louisiana are the only undefeated conference teams. They extended their winning streak in league play to 53 games.

MCHS played in the Hermann Tournament that started on Jan. 27 and ended on Feb. 1. The Wildcats have seven more regular season games remaining, four of them are at home.

Daume is playing for a team that has just eight players. She said she’s pleased with the way her team is playing after two months. The Wildcats were coming off a consolation championship at the South Callaway Tournament on Jan. 17.

“We’re happy, especially at practice,” Daume said. “We’re seeing a lot of growth and development. But we just got to keep working at it. We’ll get better hopefully by the end of the season.”

The MCHS Wildcats never trailed in their game with the Wright City Wildcats. They led 14-5 after the first quarter and 26-8 at halftime. MCHS extended its winning streak against Wright City to 17 games.

Daume was one of two MCHS players in double figures. Sophomore Aubrey Janes finished with 14 points, including 12 in the first half. Aliviah Fischer and Emma Rodgers each had eight for the Wildcats, who played their sixth home game this season.

Daume hit the double-figure mark after scoring a basket with 3:55 left in the game that gave the MCHS Wildcats a 43-22 lead, their biggest lead of the game.

Late in her eighth-grade year, Daume tore her ACL while playing travel basketball, forcing her to miss the first two months of her freshman season. As soon as she was cleared to play, Daume got appendicitis, forcing her to miss another month. She played just three games.

Daume said she’s happy that she’s injury free and playing in her first varsity season with the Wildcats.

“I always thought I would get back,” the sophomore said. “I never thought I would be up to my full potential. Now, I feel like I’m almost at the top of the ladder where I am at my potential.”

Daume has been playing basketball since fourth grade. She is following in the footsteps of her aunt, Erica Daume, who was the Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer with 1,300 points until Malia Rodgers broke that mark last year.

“She gives me some pointers,” Daume said. “I was always nervous to fill her shoes. I’m just trying to be the best that I can be for her.”
