The Montgomery County Youth Athletic Association will start a new season this month by participating in a new league.
The MCYAA will compete in the Lincoln County Athletic Association, which includes communities such as Jonesburg, Elsberry, Hawk Point, Old Monroe, Silex, Troy, Warrenton and Winfield.
The MCYAA ended its registration on Feb. 28. It will have six T-ball, five baseball and three softball teams that will compete in the LCAA. All of its home games will be played at Kiwanis Field at Montgomery County High School.
In the past summers, the MCYAA played against teams from Wellsville, Middletown and Martinsburg. This summer, the teams from those communities will be competing in the new Wellsville Community Athletic League that is Little League sanctioned and includes other towns such as Center, Vandalia, New London, Bowling Green and Louisiana.
During the winter, the MCYAA decided to join the LCAA, which was formed in 1993.
“The towns in the other leagues decided to go in a different direction, so we joined Lincoln so we’ll have more teams to play for our older kids,” MCYAA president Matt Vomund said. “There are older age groups in this league.”
The LCAA plays its games until late July. It holds an all-star game every year at the Hawk Point Athletic Complex and has a playoff tournament. It will have 129 teams and 23 divisions. Jonesburg plays its home games at nearby Jonesburg Elementary School.
The MCYAA has not released its schedule yet. Vomund said he is thrilled that his league will be going up against new competition this spring and summer.
“The older kids will get to face more teams instead of the same three to four teams all of the time,” Vomund said. “We can go up to older ages. We can have 16U softball and baseball.”
The MCYAA has a five-member board that includes Vomund, Adam and Richele Falloon and Chad Powell.
