Parker, Moore named all-state

All season long, Clayton Parker and Andrew Moore were the dynamic duo for the Montgomery County Wildcats, scoring a combined 1,133 points.

That certainly caught the attention of the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association.

Parker and Moore were the Wildcats’ representatives on the MBCA Class 3 all-state team, making it the first time two MCHS players earned all-state honors in the same year. Parker was named to the all-state team for the third year in a row, while Moore earned his second straight all-state honor.

Parker and Moore were part of an all-state team that included three Principia players – Sekou Cisse, Quentin Coleman and Gassim Toure. Principia, a school from St. Louis, ended the Wildcats’ season in state quarterfinal play on March 7 and won the state championship the following week.

There were 20 players on the all-state team and 14 of them were seniors, including Parker and Moore. Coleman was named player of the year and Matt Pitts of Thayer earned coach of the year honors after leading his team to a third-place finish at state.

Parker and Moore joined a group of MCHS all-state players that included Collin Parker (2021), Chase Parrish (2017), Jerad Jordan (2014), Brad Gregory (1974) and Tony Marteen (1972).

Parker and Moore helped the Wildcats finish with a 28-2 record and capture two regular season tournament titles, an Eastern Missouri Conference championship and a district crown. MCHS finished with its sixth straight winning season.

Parker and Moore were part of a talented MCHS senior class that included Isaiah Thomas, cousins Jay and Sean Rodgers, Tyler Erwin and Tatum Wessel. Parker played with the Wildcats all four years, while Moore joined the team after playing at Troy Buchanan for three years.

Parker was the Wildcats’ leading scorer with a career-high 708 points, an average of 23.6 points per game. He scored in double figures in all 30 games this season, including a 48-point effort against North Callaway on Feb. 15 that set a school record for most points in a game, breaking Parrish’s mark of 44. He scored 30 points or more six times. He had a 30-point performance against Principia in the quarterfinals, his last game as a member of the MCHS basketball program.

Parker also led the Wildcats in rebounds with 236, an average of eight a game. He grabbed 17 boards in MCHS’ 67-65 win over University City in the Ramey Shootout at Ritenour High School on Dec. 21.

Parker played varsity with the Wildcats all four years. He finished as the team’s all-time leading scorer with 2,281 points. He broke Parrish’s mark of 2,054 points in a contest against Van-Far on Feb. 4. During his career, he helped MCHS win 89 games with three EMO championships, three district titles and a fourth-place finish at the Class 3 Show-Me Showdown in his junior year.

Parker plans to continue his basketball career at Morehead State University next year. He committed to the NCAA Division I school before basketball season began in November.

Moore was a solid addition to the Wildcats since he played his first game on Dec. 5. He scored 425 points in 24 games played, an average of 17.7 points per contest. He scored in double figures in all but two games. He poured in a season-high 27 points in the Wildcats’ 63-62 loss to Union High School of Tulsa, Okla., in the semifinals of the Great 8 Classic in Jefferson City on Dec. 28. He also scored the game-winning basket with eight seconds left in the Wildcats’ win over University City.

Before joining the Wildcats, Moore had a successful career at Troy Buchanan, scoring over 1,200 points, playing in a state tournament and earning an all-state award. He was named to the Class 6 all-state team last year.

Moore plans to continue his basketball career at McKendree University next year.
