The Montgomery County and Wellsville-Middletown track seasons will continue for at least another week.
The Wildcats will send 11 athletes to the Class 3, Sectional 2 championship meet at Jim Blacklock Field, while five Tigers will compete in the Class 1, Sectional 1 championship meet at Grandview High School, located in rural Jefferson County. Both meets will be held on May 17.
The 11 MCHS sectional qualifiers are Kaylee Daume, Tyler Erwin, Aubrey Janes, Anna Klekamp, Miley Rieke, Austyn Robinson, Emma Rodgers, Jadrian Thurmon, Samantha Turner, Jillian Weekley and Mieka-Ray Wise.
Representing W-M for sectionals are Justin Beabout, Elly Cash, Cooper Henderson, Gage Marshall and Jonah Slovensky.
All of the athletes qualified for sectionals based on their finishes in district competition on May 10. The Wildcats competed in the Class 3, District 3 championship meet at Owensville, while the Tigers participated in the Class 1, District 2 championship meet at New Haven. The top four finishes in districts advance to sectionals.
At the Owensville district meet, the Wildcats got first-place finishes from Erwin (long jump and triple jump), Turner (discus and shot put) and the girls 1,600-meter relay team of Janes, Robinson, Rodgers and Wise. Second-place finishers were Erwin (high jump), Rodgers (800) and Janes (high jump). Thurmon (800), the girls 4x100 team of Janes, Klekamp, Rieke and Wise and Daume (shot put) were the third-place finishers. Coming in fourth were Thurmon (1,600), Robinson (400) and Weekley (100-meter hurdles and pole vault).
Erwin has five district titles in his high school track career. A year ago, he won titles in the high jump and triple jump.
Turner broke school records in both shot put and discus. She now has three district crowns. She placed first in districts in the shot put for the second straight year.
Janes, Robinson, Rodgers and Wise won their first district championships after helping the 4x400 pick up the win.
In the team standings, the Wildcats finished third with 90 points in the girls division and sixth in the boys division with 50.
At the New Haven district meet, the Tigers got first-place finishes from Cash (100 and 200), Henderson (110-meter hurdles) and the boys 4x100 team of Henderson, Slovensky, Marshall and Beabout. Henderson had third-place finishes in the 300-meter hurdles and high jump, Marshall placed second in the high jump, third in the 400 and fourth in the long jump and Slovensky came in third in the triple jump.
Cash broke her own school records in the 100 (13.14 seconds and 27.39 seconds) and 200 and won her first district championships.
Henderson won the district title in the 110-meter hurdles for the second year in a row. Marshall won his second district championship; he placed first in the high jump last year. Slovensky now has three district crowns; he helped the 4x100 and 4x800 teams win districts in his sophomore year. By being a member of the winning 4x100 team, Beabout won his first district championship.
The Tigers finished fifth in the boys division with 66 points and 12th in the girls division with 26.
