Senior trio lifts baseball Tigers back on track

As their high school baseball careers are about to be wrapped up, Wellsville-Middletown seniors Brennan Cash, Wyatt Moore and Cooper Henderson have something to be thrilled about.

The seniors helped the Tigers get back on the winning track in 2025. W-M has two wins this year after having none the year before.

Cash, Moore and Henderson helped the Tigers pick up their second win of the season on May 6 on senior day. W-M cruised to a 16-1 win over Missouri Military Academy in three innings.

“Coming from an 0-16 team to getting two wins this season, it feels good, especially when you get a win on senior day,” Cash said.

The seniors were honored with their parents before the game. Senior day was originally scheduled for May 1, but was moved to May 6 due to weather issues.

Out of the three seniors, Cash is the only one who played with the W-M program all four years. Cash is a three-year captain.

“I had a fun four years,” Cash said. “There was great coaching and great people all around. It’s really fun to be a part of this team.”

Moore and Henderson are playing in their second seasons with the Tigers. Moore is back on the team this spring after a year hiatus, while Henderson joined the squad last year.

“I originally started playing in my sophomore year to play with my brother (Lucas) because he was a senior there,” Moore said. “I came back for my senior year to see what I can do.”

Cash, Moore and Henderson lead a W-M team that has mostly sophomores and freshmen. Cash said the future is bright for the Tigers.

“I think they’re doing a great thing for this program,” Cash said. “I think it’s going along quite nicely. All credit to (W-M head coach Alex) Thull. He’s been our coach for three years now. He’s doing a great job.”

When Cash was a freshman, he joined a W-M team that came a victory short of going to the Class 1 Final Four the year before, losing 9-8 to Leeton in the Class 1 quarterfinals. The Tigers didn’t celebrate with a winning season in Cash’s freshman year as they won just two games.

The following year, W-M finished 9-9 in Cash’s sophomore year.

“Going from 2 wins to 9 wins from my freshman to sophomore year was pretty fun,” Cash said. “I thought we had a really good year that year. We couldn’t put it all together at the right time in districts.”

Earlier this season, W-M defeated MMA 16-4 to snap a 24-game losing streak. The Tigers lost their first seven games of the season before pulling off the road win.

“It’s always good to get a win,” Moore said. “We don’t get many around here.”

In the second meeting against MMA, W-M stormed to a 12-0 lead after the first inning. The Tigers’ 16 runs tied a season high.

“I enjoyed getting out there and playing a good game,” said Moore, who plans to attend St. Charles Community College next year. “We don’t come by good games too often, so it’s good to put on a show in front of my family and everybody who came.”

Cash ended the game with a two-out single that scored Moore. He also was the winning pitcher, giving up the only run in the top of the third.

“I felt pretty good on the mound,” Cash said. “I felt like a lot of my pitches were working pretty well. I was just putting it to where they couldn’t quite get it.”

Cash will play baseball at Missouri Valley College next year. After the game, he received a $9,300 scholarship award from the Missouri Valley baseball program at the W-M Academic Awards Ceremony.

Cash will continue a baseball career that started when he was a little boy.

“It’s one of those things where you don’t have to be in too much shape for it, but it requires a lot of hard work and effort,” Cash said. “Once you get good, it makes you feel good about yourself. I value that.”

Henderson is on double duty this spring, playing baseball and competing in track. He played basketball all four years with the Tigers and earned all-Eastern Missouri Conference honors twice. He plans to attend State Fair Community College next year.

The Tigers finished their regular season at 2-16. They will play Calvary Lutheran in a Class  1, District 9 quarterfinal  game at 4 p.m. on May 16 at New Haven.
