Wellsville-Middletown’s basketball season started on Tuesday with a split against the Community R-6 Trojans, coming from behind to win the girls game and falling in the boys contest.
The W-M girls beat Community 41-34, making it the first time since 2009 the Tigers beat the Trojans. W-M lost to Community twice last year, including a 56-50 defeat in the Class 1, District 10 championship game.
W-M dropped to Community 55-37 in the boys contest. The Tigers lost to the Trojans in their season opener for the second year in a row.
Both girls and boys teams will be back in action next week, when they compete in the Montgomery County Invitational Tournament. The W-M girls will play Fulton at 7:30 p.m. Monday in a first-round game, while the boys will take on top-seeded Mexico at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in a first-round contest. Both games will be played at Montgomery County Middle School.
The W-M girls were led by junior Keigan Hall with 17 points in their win over Trojans. Hall scored 13 of her points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter.
Senior Jenelle Boeckelman scored seven points, followed by junior Hallie Guzy with six, freshman Elly Cash with five, senior Bethany Slovensky with four and sophomore Helanea McKenzie with two.
W-M (1-0) trailed 27-18 in the third quarter before rallying to take a 31-30 lead on a basket by Guzy with 3:52 to go in the fourth quarter. The Tigers hit nine free throws down the stretch.
The Tigers are looking to finish with their second straight winning season. They went 16-11 a year ago.
The W-M boys had just six players in their contest with Community. Two of the returning players from last year, juniors Gage Marshall and Cooper Henderson, provided most of the offensive punch for the Tigers. Marshall scored 12 points and Henderson added 11 for W-M.
Also for the Tigers, junior Jonah Slovensky finished with seven points in his first high school basketball game.
W-M (0-1) scored just eight points in the first half before outscoring the Trojans 29-24 in the second half.
Both girls and boys teams will have their next home contests on Dec. 5. The girls will take on Silex in their Eastern Missouri Conference opener, while the boys play Chamois.
