As it approaches the halfway point of its season, the Wellsville-Middletown track team has been getting strong performances from three of its athletes – sophomore Elly Cash and seniors Jonah Slovensky and Gage Marshall.
Cash, Slovensky and Marshall are the only Tiger athletes who placed in all four meets W-M competed in this year – the Van-Far Open on March 24, the New Bloomfield Invitational on March 28, the Monroe City Invitational on April 3 and the Bowling Green Mini-Meet on April 7. All three of them competed at state last year.
Marshall, a two-time all-state medalist in the high jump, is enjoying another strong year in the jumping events. At Van-Far, he placed first in the high jump at Van-Far, which is the only first-place finish the Tigers got this season, and third in the long jump. He came in third in the long jump and fifth in the high jump at Bowling Green, fourth in the high jump and seventh in the long jump at Monroe City and fourth in the high jump at New Bloomfield. Marshall also placed in the 400 twice, finishing third at Van-Far and sixth at Monroe City.
Marshall jumped a season-best 18 feet, 9.75 inches in the long jump at Bowling Green and a season-best 5-9.75 in the high jump at Monroe City. He ran a personal-best time of 56.30 seconds in the 400 at Monroe City.
Slovensky is also having a banner season in the jumping events as well as the hurdle events. He finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and triple jump at Bowling Green, sixth in the triple jump and seventh in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles at Monroe City, fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the 110 hurdles at New Bloomfield and second in the triple jump, fifth in the 110 hurdles and eighth in the long jump at Van-Far. Slovensky ran a personal-best 49.45 seconds in the 300 hurdles at Bowling Green and jumped a personal-best 17-0.75 in the triple jump at New Bloomfield.
Cash, who is the school’s record holder in the 100, is once again the team’s top performer in the sprinting events. She finished third in the 100 and 200 and sixth in the 400 at Bowling Green, fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200 at Monroe City, fifth in the 100 and eighth in the 200 at New Bloomfield and third in the 200 and seventh in the 100 at Van-Far. She ran a personal-best 28.39 seconds in the 200 at Bowling Green.
The Tigers also got solid efforts from seniors Cooper Henderson – an all-state performer in the 110 hurdles last spring – and Della Gosseen. Henderson placed third in the 110 hurdles, fourth in the high jump and eighth in the 300 hurdles at Monroe City and third in the high jump, fourth in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles at New Bloomfield. Gosseen came in third in the shot put and eighth in the 800 at Van-Far and eighth in the discus at New Bloomfield.
The Tigers’ next meet is April 16 at the North Callaway Thunderbird Invite. They will also compete in meets at Van-Far (April 21), Paris (April 25), Louisiana (April 19) and at the Eastern Missouri Conference meet on May 2 at Montgomery County.
