The Montgomery County football team was celebrating like it was 2020 after cruising past the Mark Twain Tigers 38-0 on the road on Oct. 3.
The Wildcats posted their first shutout in five years with the win over Mark Twain. Their last shutout was on Sept. 25, 2020, when they blanked Wright City 37-0 at Jim Blacklock Field. MCHS had just six shutouts in the last 15 years.
Now, the Wildcats will look to celebrate Hero Night on Oct. 10 with a victory over Bowling Green at home.
The Bobcats, who reached the Class 2 semifinals in each of the last two years, are off to a 2-4 start. Van-Far handed Bowling Green a 52-28 home loss on Oct. 3.
MCHS improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Eastern Missouri Conference play. The Wildcats won their third straight game and surpassed last year’s win total of three. They need to win one of their next three remaining regular season games to clinch a winning season in regular season play.
Also with the win over the Tigers, MCHS remains in first place in Class 2, District 2 playoff points. The Wildcats lead Bowling Green by almost 10 points (35.83-26.00) in the standings. Priory, Hermann, Duchesne and Cuba round out the rest of the standings. MCHS beat Hermann 26-18 in its season opener on Aug. 29 for only its win against its district opponents.
Against Mark Twain, junior Lafe McCurdy finished with his first two-touchdown effort of the season, scoring both of them in the first half.
He caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Adrian Combs with 8:42 left in the first quarter. He scored a 25-yard touchdown run with 8:34 to go in the third quarter.
McCurdy now has four touchdowns this season. He scored the go-ahead touchdown in the Wildcats’ 28-14 win over Van-Far in a Week 5 game and a touchdown against Monroe City in a Week 2 contest.
Also for MCHS, sophomore Jackson Benney caught a six-yard touchdown pass by Combs with 5:04 remaining in the second quarter to give his team a 22-0 halftime lead.
The Wildcats got touchdowns from Combs and senior Chase Queathem in the third quarter to increase their lead to 38-0. Combs scored a 1-yard run with 6:12 to go, followed by a two-point conversion by senior Wyatt March. A 14-yard touchdown run by Queathem and a two-point conversion by Benney completed the scoring in the game.
MCHS outscored its opponents 112-20 in its last three games. It started its winning streak with a 46-6 victory over the South Callaway Bulldogs in Week 4.
The Wildcats have one more road game left in the regular season. They will travel to Wright City in a Week 8 game.
