The Montgomery County football team couldn’t pull off another win over the North Callaway Thunderbirds on Sept. 13.
The Wildcats remain winless after losing to the Kingdom City school 30-18 on the road. They dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in Eastern Missouri Conference play.
MCHS returns to Callaway County on Sept. 20. This time, the Wildcats will travel to South Callaway to face the Bulldogs in a non-EMO contest.
South Callaway left the EMO last year and is now a member of the Central State Eight Conference. The Mokane school is 1-2 after picking up a 28-13 road victory over Lexington on Sept. 13.
MCHS will look to avoid another loss to South Callaway. The Bulldogs cruised to a 44-15 win over the Wildcats at Mokane last year.
The Wildcats lost to Hermann and Monroe City in their first two games at home. With the loss to North Callaway, MCHS is off to an 0-3 start for the second time in three years.
Last year, the Wildcats beat North Callaway 26-6 at Jim Blacklock Field.
In the Sept. 13 contest, the MCHS rallied from an 18-0 deficit to get within 24-18 in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as it got.
The Wildcats got touchdowns from senior Jacob Hogue and juniors Mac Farrar and Adrian Combs. It’s the second week in a row MCHS scored 18 points.
Hogue scored a five-yard touchdown run with 7:44 left in the third quarter to cut the Thunderbirds’ lead to 18-6. It was his second touchdown of the season. His TD ended a six-play, 34-yard drive. Hogue helped the Wildcats get possession of the ball at North Callaway’s 34-yard line with a 44-yard kickoff return.
Farrar’s 30-yard touchdown catch with 5:21 remaining in the third got the Wildcats within 24-12. It was his first touchdown of the season.
Combs scored his first touchdown of the season – a 1-yard run – with 2:11 to go to trim North Callaway’s lead to 24-18.
The Wildcats had three chances to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t convert. A sack by Trenton Birkner gave MCHS possession at North Callaway’s 44-yard line with 11:10 to go, but the Wildcats later turned the ball over on downs. They threw interceptions in the next two drives.
North Callaway was led by sophomore Jaiden Galbreath with four touchdowns, giving him seven on the season. He scored a TD in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth.
Wyatt Haden also scored a touchdown for the Thunderbirds. He intercepted a pass from Combs and scored a TD with 5:13 remaining to give his team a 12-0 halftime lead.
North Callaway improved to 3-0, surpassing last year’s win total of two. The Thunderbirds will take on Bowling Green, which is also 3-0, in a Week 4 game.
