In late October, the Missouri Department of Social Services announced it won’t be able to pay SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits due to the ongoing government shutdown, causing concern for food pantries in the Montgomery County area.

Parker Calbreath was named the recipient of the Jonesburg Elementary 5th Grade Optimist Student of the Month of September. The Jonesburg Optimist Club sponsors the Jonesburg Elementary 5th Grade Optimist Student of the Month. In order to receive this award, students make their classmates feel that there is something special about them, they look for the positive or sunny side of everything to make their optimism come true and they forget about the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. Each student of the month receives a plaque presented by the Optimist Club.

Jonesburg resident Marie Cowie placed third in the American Heroes category of the Eighth Annual Salt River Quilt Show, which took place at the Mark Twain Memorial Shrine in Florida (Monroe County).

Jonesburg Elementary honored its Kiwanis Terrific Kids. The Terrific Kids is a student-recognition program that promotes character development, self-esteem and perseverance. “Terrific” is an acronym for Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable. On October 25, deputies conducted a traffic stop in Montgomery City for an equipment violation. Upon contacting the occupants’ deputies observed that all individuals in the vehicle were under 21 years of age and they detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The driver submitted to a preliminary breath test which indicated a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .131%. Both passengers also provided breath samples, each showing a BAC above .080%. The driver and one passenger were arrested and transported to the MC Jail. The third occupant was released to a parent and issued a citation for minor visibly intoxicated. The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and the passenger was charged with minor visibly intoxicated.

As the U.S. government shutdown stretches into its 29th day with no resolution in sight, Youth In Need has made the decision to keep its Head Start program open for the month of November. 

Harry Johnson comes to the Montgomery County Senior Center on Wednesday mornings with some other wonderful seniors who play great music for the citizens to listen to. Harry and his wonderful wife hold the JAM music sections during the summer at the center. Harry helps out with so many things and has a wonderful upbeat personality for all of the people to smile about. He helps out with the upkeep of the pool tables, pool sticks and so much more. He enjoys playing pool and having a good time with fellowship at the center. Thanks to Harry for all of his help and fun times at the center.

St. John White Chapel Baptist Church in Montgomery City held its 143rd anniversary on Oct. 19. Founded in 1883, St. John White Chapel Baptist Church is the oldest church in Montgomery County. It holds its services at 11 a.m. on the first and third Sunday of each month.

Glitterville is on the move again. The store full of Christmas items began its 18th year on Oct. 30 by opening at its third location in five years. It is now located at the Allen Street Building at 308 N. Allen in Montgomery City.

November is a busy time for families. There are football games, cookouts, bonfires, camping trips, parent-teacher conferences and holiday feasts to name just a few. Do you ever feel that you need some downtime with your family? A break from the rush? Maybe a break from technology?

Wood Hat Spirits had plenty of reasons to celebrate on Oct. 30. The New Florence whiskey distillery earned top honors at the 2025 Heartland Whiskey Competition, winning the Best Farmer-Distilled Bourbon award nationally and the Best In State award for Missouri. Montgomery County FFA member educators are leading Montgomery City and Jonesburg elementary students through the Ag Moves curriculum as they make connections to their food, fuel, fibers and farmers today.

In the past year, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has received reports from citizens who collectively lost nearly $71,000.00 to scams. Sadly, that number only represents those who reported the crime, many victims never come forward due to feeling of embarrassment or ashamed.
