The Montgomery County football team started a new tradition this year. Every time the Wildcats win, they would blast the song, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” in their locker room.

Despite missing a short time due to injury, Keira Ray enjoyed an outstanding first varsity season with the Montgomery County Wildcats. The sophomore was a valuable setter, recording 293 assists in 22 matches and finished in double digits in assists 14 times. The strong efforts certainly impressed the Eastern Missouri Conference volleyball coaches. Ray was selected on the first team of the all-EMO volleyball team, which was released on Oct. 20.

Gracie Cobb, Dylan Topel, Skylar Bethmann and Hailey Meyer had their biggest trip of their high school softball careers on Oct. 31. The Montgomery County seniors played in the Class 2 Final Four at Meador Park in Springfield and helped the Wildcats place fourth. Even though their careers didn’t end with a victory, the seniors were thrilled with the experience of playing at the state event. It was the first time MCHS played in the Final Four.

The Montgomery County softball team made more history on Halloween night of 2025. The Wildcats left Springfield on Oct. 31 with their first state trophy in program history after finishing fourth with a 0-2 record in the Class 2 Final Four at Meador Park. They lost 16-0 to the South Harrison Bulldogs 16-0 in five innings in the semifinals and the Mid-Buchanan Dragons 6-0 in the third-place game. They played both games on the same day.

Anna Johnson was pretty busy in her first two months as a freshman at Montgomery County High School. She competed in both cross country and volleyball for the Wildcats, making her the only MCHS athlete to play two sports in the same season.

The Montgomery County volleyball team was glad it had a much shorter drive to district tournament play this year. The Montgomery County basketball teams will wrap up their 2025 portion of their schedules with a trip to Moberly on Dec. 29. Both boys and girls teams will be playing the Macon Tigers at the Peak/Sport and Spine Shootout at Moberly Area Community College. The boys contest is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., while the girls game will be played at 4 p.m. 

Before the fall athletic season began in August, the Montgomery County Wildcats had won 85 Eastern Missouri Conference championships in athletic competition. On Oct. 13, the softball team brought home championship No. 86.

Every year, the Montgomery County volleyball team looks forward to having its Pink Out match. It gives the players a chance to not only wear their pink uniforms, but to help out county residents who are fighting cancer. “Pink Out is definitely a very fun day for us all,” MCHS junior Khloe Kribbs said.

Austyn Spinks is definitely making up for lost time this year with the Montgomery County girls cross country team. The junior returned to the squad this fall after not competing last year and is enjoying an outstanding season that included two medals, including one at the Eastern Missouri Conference championship meet on Oct. 18 at Bowling Green.
